He composed this hymn for evening services, namely vespers today. Since the Latin term Trinitas had already been used by Tertullian († c. 220) in the history of Christianity, Saint Ambrose emphasized this dogma with his doxology. At that time, even after the Council of Nicaea, the heresy of Arius was indeed so powerful that the Bishop of Milan had to establish a better model. So this tradition in doxology goes back to this century. The Christum rogamus doxology was very frequently adopted by other liturgical hymns.
