In the center of the island you’ll the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel, where monks and hermits had sought solitude and security here long before the Benedictine monastery was consecrated in the 11th century. Over the next several 100 years, strong fortifications and Gothic additions made the abbey a major center of monastic life in medieval France.
