History of Majapahit Hotel | Oranje Hotel | Yamato Hotel | LMS Hotel

Hotel Majapahit is a historic hotel in Surabaya, the capital of the province of East Java, Indonesia. It was inaugurated in 1910 under the name “Hotel Oranje” by Martin Sarkies, from the famous family of Armenian hoteliers Sarkies, to whom we owe the construction of many luxury hotels in Southeast Asia. Sarkies is the founding family of Raffles Hotel in Singapore, Strand Hotel in Burma, The Eastern and Oriental Hotel in Penang.

During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, the hotel was renamed “Yamato” after the historic birthplace of Japan. It went down in the history of Indonesia with the incident of the “Yamato hotel”, when in November 1945 young Indonesian patriots tore off the blue part of the Dutch flag it was flying, leaving only the red one. and white, which is the Indonesian flag. This incident, without being the cause, was followed by the Battle of Surabaya.

Following this incident, the hotel was renamed the Merdeka Hotel (Independence Hotel).

In 1946, the Sarkies brothers returned to manage the hotel and renamed it the L. M. S. Hotel for Lucas Martin Sarkies.

In 1969, Mantrust Holdings Co. bought the hotel and renamed it Hotel Majapahit, after the historic kingdom of Majapahit. The hotel was restored in 1994 by Harry Susilo, a prominent local Chinese businessman, at a cost of $ 51 million. It reopened on January 19, 1996 as the Mandarin Oriental Majapahit Surabaya Hotel, managed by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. It was bought by the CCM Group in 2006 and renamed Hôtel Majapahit.

In 2014, the Majapahit hotel was officially recognized as a monument of cultural heritage by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
