Holy Trinity
The Holy Trinity is God, according to the teachings of the Christian churches, with the exception of some Unitarian and restorationist movements, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses. This doctrine states that God is a single substance that exists simultaneously in three distinct persons: the Father (Déu Pare), the Son (Déu Fil) and the Holy Spirit. Although often used synonymously with the concept of the Trinity, the term “Godhead” is broader, and includes other ideas about how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are related.
History
Historically, the Trinitarian dogma has been affirmed as an article of faith in the Nicene Creed (accepted by all branches of Christianity except Unitarianism or Restorationism ), and the Athanasian Creed , which sought to standardize beliefs about This topic. These creeds were formulated and ratified by the Church of the 3rd and 4th centuries in opposition to heterodox theologies about the Trinity.
The Nicene Creed, which is a classic formula of this doctrine, uses the Greek term homoousios which means “of the same substance”. The spelling of this word differs by one letter from homoiousios, which means “of similar substance.” This other word was used by followers of non-Trinitarian dogmas before the Council of Nicaea.
More than one doctrine in opposition arose to question the dogma or to different versions about the relationship and preeminence of one of the three elements. Today, most Restorationists reject the dogma of the Trinity as it has been formulated by the rest of the branches of traditional Christianity. Jehovah’s Witnesses reject it completely, as they believe that Jesus Christ is a being created by God, and Mormons believe in a broad concept of “deity” in which God the Father and Jesus Christ each have a body, and, with the Spirit Holy, they form a “deity” that is united only in purpose. For their part, the Unitariansthey reject that God can be divided into persons, as well as the divine nature of Jesus, and defend a rationalistic view of religion.
What does the Bible say about the Trinity?
The doctrine of the Holy Trinity affirms that God is one in essence, that is, a single Being, and three in person: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The three persons of the Trinity are distinct, equal, co-eternal (the Son was not created by the Father, He is eternal), and consubstantial (of the same Being, the Son has the same divine nature as the Father and the Mind).
