Fordite or Detroit Agate, Colored Stones Consisting of Old Car Paint Deposits
“Fordites” and “Detroit Agates” are two different terms that refer to different materials.
Fordites are synthetic gemstones that were accidentally created during the production of Ford cars in the 1920s-1960s. The layers of paint used to paint cars were sprayed onto work surfaces and hardened over time to form colorful layers of hard, polished materials that can be used to make jewelry and other decorative items.

Origin and composition of Fordite stone
Although it can very easily be confused with an Agate, Fordite does not fall into the category of precious stones, strictly speaking. In fact, it is not even a rock, much less a mineral. Fordite, entirely composed of a synthetic chemical structure, is in no way the result of natural sedimentation. As explained above, it is rather a pile of paint debris, probably composed of nitrocellulose (or cellulose nitrate) and chemical dyes, which owe their hardness and beauty only to repeated passages through the gears of a booming industry. This is also the reason why we find them of all sizes, of all weights and even of different weights while being of common dimensions.
These characteristics depending only on the chances of Fordist production at the time, there is a very wide variety, each polished in its own way and giving off striking colors, coat after coat of paint. This is the very thing that, by being able to feed the enthusiasm of the most passionate collectors around the world, has managed to impose Detroit Agate in so many hearts.
